The
event I have anticipated for months is here – Salone
Internazionale del Mobile 2013 hosted annually in Milan. This fair is HUGE
for design professionals around the globe. Interior designers, industrial
designers (product designers), architects and more fly in from all over the
world to see the latest trends in design. The show basically creates a
benchmark for what is the latest, hottest, most technologically advanced in the
field of design for the next year or three.
This
year, Milan Design Week is from Tuesday 9th – Sunday 14th
April 2013. It comprises of the main Salone del Mobile fair at the exhibition
centre as well as a million concurrent events all over Milan during the entire
week. Design professionals take the opportunity to showcase new product lines,
launch new stores and host networking events. It is a frenzy of late nights and
long days trying to take in everything you can.
My
first day was amazing. Yesterday I visited 13 stores / showrooms / installations
/ exhibits all around the centre of Milan. I took more than 200 pictures (see
some below)!
How can I describe
Day 1 of the show: Exciting, eye opening, inspiring, delightful
What themes stood
out:
Use of innovative materials (widespread use of resin as a finish and base
material), compact kitchen design, predominance of neutral colours,
incorporation of natural elements and nature-inspired motifs into interior
environments e.g. leaf-print wallpaper, collaborations between furniture makers
and external product designers or related industry brands e.g. Schiffini
kitchen collaboration with Elle Italia
What was the store
experience like: Informative, innovative visual merchandising (amazing set-up at Poltrona Frau), knowledgeable and
passionate staff (notable experience with Domenico, the export manager at Riflessi and Antonio, the sales
assistant at Sahrai)
Where have I been:
Discussions - “Futureology: Senses
and Tastes” talk hosted by Be Open about the how different cultures and
worldviews increasingly affect the way we live, cook, eat, dress
Unveiling
of a new product line – Kartell, Molteni & C, Tiffany & Co, Poliform,
Riflessi, Rossana, Sahrai, Schiffini
Flagship
store launch – Riflessi
Brand
experience – Poltrona Frau, Porro
Exhibition
/ Gallery – Nilufar, Hybrid
Architecture and Design Exhibit, Zerodesigno
Highlights of the
day:
- Receiving 3 personal tours of new product lines at Reflissi,
Sahrai and Schiffini
- Scoring 3 party invitations to Rossana, Reflissi and Sahrai
