1950s VINTAGE DINER CHAIRS - ECLECTIC CHAIR |
As
I was writing my last
post about Amatuli’s great store, I felt a bout of nostalgia for home
(Zimbabwe) and went on an online hunt for African print products. I found some
truly delightful stuff – all the way from vividly upholstered armchairs to
playful handbags that made me so happy.
The
first words that pop to mind when I look at my furniture finds are: fun,
funky and fresh. The vibrant colours against structured lines are really
interesting. The unexpected application of blocks of lively patterns against
muted background works really well for that element of surprise. This trend is
definitely the new level of sophistication if you can pull it off. It’s also
playful for anyone trying to create an exuberant, carefree look.
My
first stop is definitely the Vintage Diners by Eclectic Chair. I LOVE their quirkiness
– they are perfect for my personality. I would buy a couple of pairs of these and
create an assemblage for my dining room. Set against a simple white or
concrete-top table this look would be perfect.
Natalie Du Toit's Kente Cloth series by Indigi Designs is also immeasurably cute - I love how understated her pieces are. Unlike the others it doesn't overwhelm - it merely suggests an ethnic tone. People who aren't into loud pieces would do well to take this direction.
And then there's all the fashion thrown in there for fun - I love the dresses, handbags and accessories. Vlisco is really a standout company in their ability to churn out fresh prints in continually updated collections and adapt them for high-fashion. Their creativity with their ad campaigns is just large. I aspire to own something of theirs (or get a really good tailor from Zim to make something cute for me in their fabric.)
Enjoy!

Hi,
ReplyDeleteWax has a relaxed fit after a while. How is it possible to make a good chair or sofa with it ?
Bises,
Julie
I'm making couch cushions and maybe upholstering a chair with wax print... I think it should be washed first to get the initial coating off. I would only do a full chair with the heavier chitenge fabric that doesn't have the coating, though. An experienced upholsterer should know the best approach.
